Defining Generation X

Last updated: August 19, 2024 at 11:55 am

Generation X is a demographic cohort that follows the Baby Boomer generation and precedes the Millennial generation. The birth years for Generation X vary somewhat, but typically fall between the mid-1960s and the early 1980s, with 1965-1980 being the most common range.

The name “Generation X” comes from a book by Douglas Coupland called “Generation X: Tales for an Accelerated Culture,” which was published in 1991. The book portrayed a group of disaffected and cynical young adults who were disillusioned with traditional values and institutions.

Some defining characteristics of Generation X include being the first generation to grow up with widespread access to home computers, video games, and the internet. They also experienced events such as the Cold War, the fall of the Berlin Wall, and the rise of the AIDS epidemic.

Members of Generation X are often described as independent, resourceful, adaptable, and pragmatic. They are sometimes referred to as the “latchkey generation” because many grew up in households where both parents worked, and they had to take care of themselves after school. They have also been described as being skeptical of authority and institutions, and are often seen as having a more realistic and practical outlook on life than their Baby Boomer predecessors.
