Purpose of a job interview
Participated in a slightly different job interview and the headhunter asked:
“If aliens landed on Earth and offered to take you to their planet, but you could never return to Earth, would you go?”
It may be an attempt to assess one’s willingness to try new things or whether one is “foolhardy” or perhaps the level of boldness? But the variables will be difficult to judge in an answer – either in a yes or no direction.
1o Tips for job Interview
When preparing to interview a job candidate, here are 10 tips to keep in mind:
- Review the candidate’s resume and cover letter carefully to get a sense of their qualifications, experience, and background.
- Consider inviting other team members or colleagues to join you in the interview process to get their input and perspectives on the candidate.
- Find/prepare a comfortable and professional interview space that is free from distractions.
- Dress professionally and be always on time for the interview.
- Create a list of interview questions that are relevant to the job and will help you assess the candidate’s competencies, knowledge and skills, experience, and the match for the role. Consider asking both behavioral questions (e.g., “Tell me about a time when you had to solve a difficult problem”) and situational questions (e.g., “How would you handle a situation where a client was dissatisfied with your work?”).
If an answer to a question is useless, don’t ask the question, does not provide more clarification. - Try to make decisions on facts, not assumptions or irrelevancies. Focus on whether you think the candidate is a match and can succeed in the job.
- Be sure that after an interview you can answer the question: “Is the candidate suitable or not suitable? And what is your argumentation.
- During the interview, make sure to actively listen to the candidate’s responses and ask follow-up questions to gain a deeper understanding of their competencies, knowledge, skills and experience.
- Take notes during the interview to help you remember important details and observations.
- After the interview, debrief with your team and compare notes to gain a full picture of the candidate’s strengths and weaknesses.
Remember that the goal of the interview process is to identify the best candidate for the job based on their competencies, knowledge skills, experience, and fit for the role and the company culture.
