Attrition vs. Turnover: Understanding the Differences

15Five If you’re at the coffee bar throwing back espresso shots this morning because you were up all night worrying about turnover at your company, you’re not alone. 15Five’s latest research shows that more than 80% of business leaders believe a decrease in employee retention presents a risk to company success. The Great Upheaval has many executives and HR leaders frazzled, and there’s not enough coffee in the world to fix all the talent issues that are converging at once. But when an employee leaves the company, is it always a bad thing? What exactly is the difference between “attrition” and “turnover,” and are some departures inevitable? In this article, we’ll look at what it really means when you part ways with an employee, what makes turnover “regrettable,” and what you can do to ensure you retain more top performers.  What is attrition? Attrition and turnover both mean an employee and a company are parting ways. But the circumstances of that departure are what make these two terms different. When an employee leaves a company because of a natural event or process, this is considered attrition. Examples include: Elimination of the job position Layoffs Retirement Chronic health issues  Employee passing away Attrition happens when departures occur as part of a normal employee lifecycle. When an employee retires, or a specific job is eliminated due to automation or some other industry or business change, this is typically not a major financial concern and can actually reduce short-term costs in many cases. Other types of attrition are inevitable, and while it’s sad to see someone go, retirement, illness, and even death are part of life.  What is turnover? Unlike attrition rate, turnover can be a more concerning metric—especially when you see an upward trend. High turnover rates can signal trouble brewing and...

OKRs vs Scrum: How They Differ and How They Can Work Together

15Five We talk a lot about Objectives and Key Results (OKRs) at 15Five, because we believe in the value of using a consistent goal-setting framework for high-performing teams. We use OKRs internally and incorporate them into our platform to help keep people, processes, and activities throughout the organization focused on the right priorities. One question we hear often is what role Scrum plays in an OKR process. Are OKRs and Scrum similar? What makes them different? Can you do both? In this article, we’ll share what you need to know about OKRs and Scrum and how an organization may have both processes in place. What are OKRs? The OKR methodology helps organizations, teams, and individuals define and track business objectives and outcomes. The methodology was created by former Intel CEO Andy Grove, then introduced to the general public by John Doerr, who outlined it in his book, Measure What Matters. In the book, Doerr shares how using OKR goals has helped companies like Intel, Google, and Microsoft achieve exponential growth. The OKR formula: I will do ‘X’ as measured by ‘Y’ This formula essentially means an individual or team will complete a specific objective as measured by the completion of a determined set of key results. Objectives should be aspirational and motivating, and Key Results should be grounded in data, time-boxed, and numeric. Here is an OKR example: Objective: Turn our best customers into loyal brand ambassadors. Key results: Develop and launch a customer community in Q3. Publish 10 new customer case studies by the end of the year. Increase NPS score from 6.5 to 7.5 between Q2 and Q4. Learn more about creating great OKRs > What is Scrum? Scrum is a project management methodology that was created by Jeff Sutherland and Ken Schwaber in the 1990s to meet...

5 Must-Have Features to Look For in an OKR Tool

15Five A formalized goal-setting process is essential for any organization that wants to define and track business objectives and drive high performance. If you’re using the Objectives and Key Results (OKR) goal-setting framework, you already understand why goal-setting and tracking are so important. (If you’re new to OKRs, check out our blog on the basics of OKR goals for a helpful overview.) In this article, we’ll focus on the software side of OKRs, and how the right tools can help you facilitate a great goal-setting process. Read on to learn more about five features we believe are critical for creating and tracking OKRs and motivating employees to do their best work. Why having an OKR tool is beneficial OKRs encourage employees to strive for and achieve ambitious goals. They remind employees, managers, and leaders what needs to be done and the steps they need to take to achieve those objectives. When done right, OKRs can be your company’s roadmap for progress, aligning the entire organization around a common mission, vision, and set of values.  All that being said, OKRs are only effective if they’re actually being prioritized as part of your performance management operations. If they’re not front-and-center in employees’ minds, even the most well-crafted OKRs can be forgotten or ignored. That’s why an OKR tool that integrates with employees’ and managers’ day-to-day activities is critical to facilitating regular conversations around goals and keeping individuals and teams on track. What to look for in an OKR tool While every company and industry has unique needs when it comes to managing goals, there are some common things we have found that most organizations will benefit from when choosing an OKR tool. The following are five of the top features to consider when looking to implement an OKR solution. An easy-to-use interface...
